Born in 1967 in Klagenfurt, began his artistic career with studies in graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna before embarking on a successful acting career. After engagements at the Theater der Jugend, Volkstheater, and Schauspielhaus Leipzig, he was a member of the Wiener Burgtheater ensemble from 1997 to 2013. Today, he is widely known to a broad audience through film and television productions such as Vorstadtweiber and Vienna Blood. Parallel to his acting career, Maurer has continuously pursued his work as a visual artist. He works with great discipline on studies of eye and hand – both acts of nature observation and meditative engagement. Themes from theater, drama, and epic narratives permeate much of his work and often intertwi- ne with deeply personal, existential experiences.
