An extraordinary series of concerts and events amidst the works by the Gugging Artists – in the very place that even pop icons like David Bowie used as an inspiration for their work. It creates something new, but it’s also a kind of renaissance. It’s music, but not only and much more. It’s, like the gallery gugging itself, unconventional.
With the gallery gugging special edition, the artistic venue, which under the leadership of gallery director Nina Katschnig has developed into one of the world’s leading art brut galleries, has been increasingly opening up to new art forms and experimental works since 2017 – until now primarily from the field of music. As the artistic director of the series of events, which has been in existence since 2017, Michael Martinek (Fabrique Agency), the gallery’s long-standing musical companion, is responsible for the content.
It’s a docking to artistic experiments, especially since the internationally traded works by the Gugging Artists have also provided important impulses in terms of pop culture: in the 1990s, David Bowie, among others, was a guest on several occasions for research purposes for his album “1. Outside”, and Einstürzende Neubauten have also made a significant contribution to the gallery’s development with their second album “Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T.” (Drawings of the Patient O.T.). – reference is made to the unmistakable style of the Gugging Artist Oswald Tschirtner.
In recent years, numerous premieres and exclusive performances have been on the programme of the gallery gugging special edition. An enthusiastic audience was left behind by, the British avant-garde musician Christopher James Chaplin, whose latest experimental work received its world premiere at Gugging, the exceptional Ukrainian pianist and “Continuous Music” founder Lubomyr Melnyk, and the great actor Klaus Maria Brandauer. Brandauer shone with a reading of selected Bowie song texts and was impressively accompanied by the sound artists Jana Irmert and Runar Magnusson. A magical moment.
No less magical were the breathtaking performances by Mira Lu Kovacs (Schmieds Puls, 5K HD), Voodoo Jürgens and Lukas Lauermann.
The two versatile acting favourites and musicians Manuel Rubey and Gerald Votava landed a huge audience success with a programme especially put together for these series. And an unforgettable spectacle was also the guest appearance by the British indie rock band Art Brut, led by charismatic frontman Eddie Argos.
And we promise: the excitement will continue!
