house of artists

The House of Artists is the origin of the art from Gugging, because since 1981 the Gugging Artists live in this building. The House of Artists is a work of art itself: the façade is painted with the murals of internationally successful Gugging Artists such as Johann Garber, Philipp Schöpke, Oswald Tschirtner, August Walla and others. Inside you can find the room of the universal artist August Walla, covered from ceiling to floor with paintings, the workshop of Johann Garber and the living rooms of the Gugging Artists. The House of Artists is at once a work of art, a contemporary document and a testimony of appropriation.

museum gugging

Conceived as an exhibition house for the Gugging Artists and the art movement art brut, the museum gugging shows the works by the Gugging Artists at their place of origin and is at the same time a forum for international art brut. With this orientation, the museum gugging occupies a unique position in the Austrian museum landscape and is one of the most important international exhibition venues for art brut. It is oriented towards high quality standards and measures itself against international exhibition standards. Visitor friendliness, service orientation, accessibility and bilingualism are a natural part of the museum’s culture. The museum gugging refers to Jean Dubuffet’s concept of art brut and leads to an open scientific discourse. Dubuffet defined art brut as uneducated art that is created spontaneously, unreflected and free of academic influence and current trends. Since the 1970s, the Gugging Artists have been among the most important exponents of art brut worldwide. Jean Dubuffet personally recognised them as representatives of this art movement. The museum aims to present their artists and to establish art brut as an international art movement. Exhibitions are put together in the house by the artistic director and renowned curators from Germany and abroad. The museum gugging attaches special importance to a modern and dedicated art education and opens itself to groups of young visitors and sees itself historically as part of the Art Brut Center Gugging. The location Maria Gugging, the affiliation to the Art Brut Center and the immediate proximity to the Gugging Artists are part of the distinctive character of this house. Website museum gugging
