The exhibition “Gorée – Cartographier les Afriques” brings together works by François Burland, Bass Dhem and Alpha Diallo on the Senegalese island of Gorée. It takes as its starting point the question of which images, boundaries and ideas emerge when we speak of “Africa” – and from whose perspective maps, territories and histories are created.
Beginning with Gorée as a place of memory and passage, the exhibition approaches cartography as a critical, poetic and restorative act. It explores the relationships between memory and movement, territory and migration, belonging and departure, as well as between real and imagined geographies.
Curated by Mama Anne, the exhibition is presented at the Musée historique, the Ancien Palais du Gouverneur and in public spaces across Gorée.
