The exhibition “Transsexual Revolution” at the Austrian Society of the Golden Cross focuses on a central work by Verena Bretschneider. Accompanied by Angela Stief, Director of the Albertina Modern, the presentation continues the institution’s exhibition series devoted to Outsider Art.
At its centre is a powerful assemblage: a figure wearing a warlike headdress, carrying a rainbow flag and dressed in plastic sunflowers marches into battle for artistic freedom, freedom of expression and self-determination. Gender and identity are central themes in Bretschneider’s multifaceted oeuvre. Using artificial flowers, plastic cutlery, mops and other everyday materials, the artist creates humorous, provocative and surprising sculptural works with remarkable craftsmanship.
The exhibition is open every Tuesday from 10 am to 5 pm, except on public holidays, and by appointment.
