Basel Al-Bazzaz was born in 1973 in Baghdad, Iraq, and has been living in Austria, his mother’s home, since 1990. Since 2000, he has been working in a social therapy printing workshop. By sketching linoleum prints, he found his artistic expression, “through a miracle”, as he says himself. Al-Bazzaz lets small ornaments grow on fine, detailed works on paper, which radiate a special effect on the beholder. His passion is to create works of art with pencil, coloured pencils, and watercolours, which gives him the most pleasure, according to the artist. He appreciates his life in Austria and yet has a longing for the Orient, which is also expressed in his works. The artist’s sources of inspiration are mainly nature and great artists such as Frida Kahlo.
