Didier Kassaï was born in 1974 in Sibut, Central African Republic, and lives and works in Bangui. As a self-taught artist, he began drawing with charcoal at an early age, inspired by his mother. In 1990 he was discovered at a workshop at the Centre Culturel Français, and from the late 1990s onwards he worked as a caricaturist and comic artist, first for the newspaper Le Perroquet, later as a freelancer.
At the heart of his work is everyday life in a country marked by civil war and political tension. Kassaï draws what he sees, combining documentary observation with social and political critique, often infused with humour and satire.
He has participated in numerous workshops and residencies across Africa, Europe, Japan and the United States, and has published several comic projects, including Tempête sur Bangui (2015), a documentary comic about the 2013 civil war. His work has received international recognition, including an award at the Festival in Angoulême. Alongside his artistic practice, Kassaï is committed to education and runs workshops for young cartoonists in the Central African Republic.
