“Klosterneuburg—that is my most beautiful paradise”

In 2026, August Walla would have turned 90; this year marks the 25th anniversary of his death. An outsider during his lifetime due to his health-related peculiarities, he is now considered one of the most significant representatives of Art Brut thanks to his fascinating Gesamtkunstwerk. However, it is not Walla’s body of work—which has already been honoured in numerous national and international exhibitions—that will be the focus of the city museum’s memorial exhibition. The main emphasis is on his deep love for his hometown of Klosterneuburg, which found expression in numerous letters and pictures.
